From a Small Turkish Village to Pennsylvania

Born in Erzincan, Turkey, in 1972, Hamdi Ulukaya grew up in a family of Kurdish dairy farmers who made traditional cheese and yogurt. He moved to the United States in 1994 to study English at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and later enrolled at the University at Albany in New York. In 2005, Ulukaya stumbled upon an ad for a defunct yogurt factory in South Edmeston, New York. The plant, previously owned by Kraft Foods, was shutting down, leaving hundreds of local workers unemployed. Seeing an opportunity, Ulukaya secured a loan from the Small Business Administration and purchased the factory in 2005, despite having no formal background in yogurt production.

He spent nearly two years perfecting the recipe for Greek yogurt, a thicker and protein-rich alternative to traditional American yogurt. In 2007, Chobani hit grocery store shelves, and within a few years, it became a household name, dominating the U.S. yogurt market.

By 2012, Chobani was the top-selling yogurt brand in the United States, surpassing industry giants like Yoplait and Dannon. Ulukaya’s vision not only introduced Americans to authentic Greek yogurt but also transformed consumer preferences, leading to an entire Greek yogurt boom in the U.S.

Commitment to Refugees and Immigrant Workers

Beyond his business success, Hamdi Ulukaya is a fierce advocate for immigrants and refugees. Recognizing the challenges that many immigrants face in securing employment, he implemented a progressive hiring strategy at Chobani. Over 30% of Chobani’s workforce consists of immigrants and refugees, many of whom struggled to find work before joining the company.

In 2016, he launched the Tent Partnership for Refugees, a global initiative that helps businesses hire and support refugees. Ulukaya believes that the private sector has a moral obligation to support displaced people, arguing that “businesses should step up, not just governments.”
